Bonmarché is a clothing retailer with over 300 stores across the UK. They were TPG’s first client when the company was founded back in 2012.
Bonmarché wanted to acquire the lease on the shop next door to their store at Idlewells Shopping Centre in Sutton-in-Ashfield. The intention was to extend their existing shop into this unit, increasing the sales floor area.
As part of the extension, Bonmarché also wanted to refurbish the layout of the shop to match their current branding. Our project manager was fully involved from inception to completion, which provided the client with a single point of contact throughout the whole project.
Early engagement was key, as this enabled us to liaise with the Landlord’s surveyor to determine what works they would undertake as part of the new lease agreement. All aspects on how the construction phase of the project would progress were covered with particular attention to site logistics within a live shopping centre.
We produced outline drawings and a schedule of work which was used to agree both the Landlord’s portion of works and Bonmarché’s intentions with regards the refurbishment works. From this, we produced detailed design drawings and an amended schedule of works which was costed by the client’s retained shop fitter. The Landlord accepted the costs for what was deemed their portion of the works and made this as a contribution to Bonmarché. This allowed them to complete the work as part of their refurbishment.
The relevant statutory application was made to Building Control with a satisfactory certificate upon completion. We also took the Principal Designer role under CDM 2015, ensuring that all aspects of pre-construction Health & Safety were acknowledged.
Throughout the construction phase, the works were fully project managed including site progress meetings. The project was completed on time and within budget, providing Bonmarché with a larger unit fully refurbished to their new store concept.
In every project, there will be something that we do just that little bit different to suit the needs of the client. In the case of Bonmarché’s store at Sutton-in-Ashfield, their issue was storage.
Due to lack of space in the existing unit, storing stock was going to be extremely difficult during the ground floor fit-out works. We arranged for the contractor to gain early entry to the new stockroom and erected racking so that stock could be moved across.
This reduced the transport costs for Bonmarché and, since the area was enclosed with polythene, the stock was also protected from dust and dirt.
